In November 2009, HEART broadened its vision to promote a healthier community by improving the activity and mobility in children with a new initiative, Shoes from the HEART, which provides shoes to relieve the burden for disadvantaged families with kindergarten through 5th grade students.  Since its inception, over 6,500 children have received new athletic shoes.   The goal is to strengthen the community, help advance education, combat juvenile delinquency and improve the personal development of a child.

Over the years donors have included:  The Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Enterprise Holding Foundation, The Procter & Gamble Paper Products Company, Albany, GA, Exopack LLC, Albany (Coveris), Annual MLK Breakfast Donors, SAMs Club, Walmart Foundation, Hands of Hope Community Scholarship Fund, Belk’s Charity, Albany (GA) Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., countless individuals, churches, and civic organizations.

Some of the youth that are served face economic exclusion, homelessness, lack of access to play areas, mental and physical disabilities.  Shoes from the HEART wants to help all children be able to participate in physical education and after-school athletic programs such as basketball, baseball, soccer, cheerleading, etc.   These type programs promote leadership, discipline, good sportsmanship, and help fight obesity.  During each shoe distributions, we witness the teary eyes of children receiving new shoes as well as those not receiving shoes, due to lack of funding.  We want to help these children continue putting their best foot forward.

When children have comfortable shoes they happily participate in physical education programs.
